Undefined Monoclonal Gammopathy (MGUS) is a condition in which an abnormal protein – known as monoclonal protein or M-protein – is found in your blood.
This abnormal protein is made in your bone marrow, the soft blood-producing tissue that fills the center of most of your bones. The disorder is most common in older men.
MGUS is generally not a problem. But more serious illnesses can sometimes occur, including some forms of blood cancers.
If you have large amounts of this protein in your blood it is important to get regular checkups so that if you get worse you can be treated sooner. People with monoclonal gammopathy usually have no signs or symptoms. Some people may have rashes or nerve problems such as numbness or tingling. The reasons
The exact cause of MGUS is unknown. Genetic changes and environmental triggers seem to play a role.
Risk factors
Factors that increase your risk of developing MGUS include:
- Age. The average age at diagnosis is 70 years.
- Run. Africans and African-Americans are more likely to experience MGUS than whites.
- Sex. MGUS is more common in men.
- Family history. You may be at greater risk of MGUS if other people in your family have the disease.
