overview
Inherited metabolic disorders refer to different types of conditions caused by genetic abnormalities – most often inherited from both parents – that affect the body’s metabolism. These conditions can also be referred to as congenital metabolic disorders.
Metabolism is a complex series of chemical reactions that help your body sustain life, including producing energy. Special enzymes break down foods or certain chemicals so your body can use them as fuel or store them right away. In addition, certain chemical processes break down substances that your body no longer needs or that it lacks.
