Glioma is a type of tumor that occurs in the brain and spinal cord. Gliomas begin in the sticky supporting cells (glial cells) that surround the nerve cells and support their function.

There are three types of glial cells that can produce tumors. Gliomas are classified based on the type of glial cells involved in the tumor and the genetic characteristics of the tumor, which can be used to predict how the tumor will behave over time and which treatments are most likely to work. symptoms

The symptoms of a glioma vary depending on the type of tumor and the size, location, and rate of growth of the tumor.

Common signs and symptoms of glioma are:

  • a headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Confusion or decrease in brain function
  • Memory loss
  • Personality changes or irritability
  • Difficulty with balance
  • Urinary incontinence

The reasons

As with most primary brain tumors, the exact cause of gliomas is not known. However, there are certain factors that can increase your risk of developing a brain tumor.

Risk factors

As with most primary brain tumors, the exact cause of gliomas is not known. However, there are certain factors that can increase your risk of developing a brain tumor. Risk factors are:

  • Your age. Your risk of developing a brain tumor increases with age. Gliomas are more common in adults between the ages of 45 and 65. However, a brain tumor can occur at any age. Certain types of gliomas, such as ependymomas and pilocytic astrocytomas, are more common in children and young adults.
  • Radiation exposure. People who have been exposed to a type of radiation called ionizing radiation are at increased risk of developing brain tumors. Examples of ionizing radiation include radiation therapy to treat cancer and exposure to radiation from atomic bombs.
  • More common forms of radiation, such as electromagnetic fields from power lines and high frequency radiation from microwave ovens, have not been shown to increase the risk of glioma.

It is not clear whether cell phone use increases the risk of brain cancer. Some studies have found a possible link between cell phone use and a type of brain tumor called an acoustic neuroma. Many other studies have found no connection. With cell phones being a relatively new factor, longer term research is needed to understand the potential impact on cancer risk. If you are concerned about the possible link between cell phones and cancer, experts recommend limiting exposure by using a speakerphone or a hands-free device that keeps the cell phone away from your head.
