Bullous pemphigoid (BUL-us PEM-fih-goid) is a rare skin condition that causes large, fluid-filled blisters. They develop on areas of the skin that bend frequently – such as the lower abdomen, thighs, or armpits. Bullous pemphigoid is most common in the elderly.
- Bullous pemphigoid occurs when your immune system attacks a thin layer of tissue under your outer layer of skin. The reason for this abnormal immune response is unknown, although it can sometimes be triggered by the use of certain medications.
- Bullous pemphigoid often goes away on its own within a few months, but can take up to five years to clear up. Treatment usually helps heal blisters and relieve itching. It may contain corticosteroids like prednisone and other drugs that suppress the immune system. Bullous pemphigoid can be life threatening, especially to the elderly who are already in poor health.Bullous pemphigoid Treatment Hyderabad
symptom
Signs and symptoms of bullous pemphigoid can include:
- Itchy skin, weeks or months before blistering
- Large blisters that do not burst easily to the touch, often along the folds of the skin
- Skin around blisters that is normal, reddish, or darker than normal
- Eczema or a beehive-like rash
- Small blisters or sores in the mouth or other mucous membranes (benign mucosal pemphigoid)
The reasons
Blisters occur due to a malfunction in your immune system.
- Your body’s immune system usually produces antibodies against bacteria, viruses, or other potentially harmful foreign substances. For reasons that are unclear, the body may develop an antibody against a specific tissue in your body.
- In bullous pemphigoid, the immune system forms antibodies against fibers that connect the outer layer of skin (epidermis) and the next layer of skin (dermis). These antibodies trigger inflammation that causes the blistered and itchy bullous pemphigoid.Bullous pemphigoid Treatment Hyderabad
