  • Throat cancer refers to cancer that develops in the throat (pharynx) or in the voice box (larynx).

Your throat is a tube of muscle that starts behind your nose and ends in the back of your neck. Larynx cancer most commonly starts in the flat cells that line the inside of the throat.

The reasons

Larynx cancer occurs when cells in your throat develop genetic mutations. These mutations cause cells to grow uncontrollably and continue to live after normal death of healthy cells. Cells that accumulate can form a tumor in the throat.

It is not known what causes the mutation that causes throat cancer. However, doctors have identified factors that may increase your risk.

Factors that can increase your risk of developing throat cancer include:

  • Smoking, including smoking and chewing tobacco
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol
  • Viral infections, including human papillomavirus (HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus
  • A diet that is low in fruits and vegetables
  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
  • Exposure to toxic substances at work

There is no proven way to prevent throat cancer. But to lower your risk of developing throat cancer, you can:

Stop smoking or don’t start smoking. If you smoke, quit. If you don’t smoke, don’t start. Quitting smoking can be very difficult, so get help. Your doctor can discuss the benefits and risks of many smoking cessation strategies such as medications, nicotine replacement products, and counseling.
Drink alcohol in moderation, if at all. If you want to drink alcohol, do it in moderation. For healthy adults, this means up to one drink a day for women and up to two drinks a day for men.
