- Salivary gland tumors are the growth of abnormal cells (tumors) that begin in the salivary glands. Salivary gland tumors are rare.

- A lump or swelling on or near your jaw or in your throat or mouth
- Numbness in part of your face
- Muscle weakness on one side of your face

The reasons
- Salivary gland tumors are rare. Its cause is not clear.
- Salivary gland tumors start when certain cells in a salivary gland develop changes (mutations) in their DNA. A cell’s DNA contains the instructions that tell a cell what to do.
- The changes cause the cells to grow and divide quickly. The abnormal cells continue to live when the healthy cells die. The cells that accumulate form a tumor.
- If more changes occur in the DNA, the abnormal cells can become cancerous. Cancer cells can invade nearby tissue and destroy it. They can also break away from the tumor and spread (metastasize) to distant areas of the body.
Risk factors
Factors that can increase your risk of developing salivary gland tumors include:
Older age. Although salivary gland tumors can occur at any age, they are most common in the elderly.
