Myelodysplastic syndromes are a group of disorders that are caused by abnormalities in blood cells or that do not function properly. Myelodysplastic syndromes result from a problem with the spongy material in your bones that makes blood cells (bone marrow).

- Tired
- shortness of breath

The reasons
In a healthy person, the bone marrow produces new, immature blood cells that mature over time. Myelodysplastic syndromes occur when something interferes with this process so that the blood cells do not mature.
Instead of developing normally, blood cells die in the bone marrow or shortly after entering the bloodstream. Over time, there are more immature and defective cells than healthy cells, leading to problems such as fatigue from anemia, infection from leukopenia, and bleeding from thrombocytopenia.

Risk factors
Factors that can increase your risk for myelodysplastic syndromes include:
- An older age. Most people with myelodysplastic syndrome are over 60 years old.
