Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) is an umbrella term for conditions that involve chronic inflammation of your digestive tract. Types of IBD include:
Ulcerative colitis. This condition includes inflammation and sores (ulcers) along the surface lining of your colon (colon) and rectum.

Symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease vary depending on the severity of the inflammation and where it occurs. Symptoms can range from mild to severe. It is likely that you have active periods of illness followed by periods of remission.
Signs and symptoms that occur in both Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis include:
- diarrhea
- Tired
- Abdominal pain and cramps
- Blood in your stool
- Reduced appetite
The reasons
The exact cause of inflammatory bowel disease is unknown. Diet and stress used to be suspected, but now doctors know that these factors can make the situation worse, but are not the cause of IBD.
One possible cause is a dysfunction of the immune system. When your immune system tries to fight off an invading virus or bacteria, an abnormal immune response also causes the immune system to attack cells in the digestive tract. Heredity also appears to play a role, as IBD is more common in people whose family members have the disease. However, most people with IBD do not have this family history. Risk factors
- Age. Most people with IBD are diagnosed before age 30. However, some people don’t develop the disease until after their 50s or 60s.
- Race or ethnicity. Although whites are at the highest risk of developing the disease, it can occur in any breed.
- Family history. You are at a higher risk if you have a close relative – such as a parent, sibling, or child – with the disease.
- To smoke cigarettes. Smoking is the main controllable risk factor for developing Crohn’s disease.
Complications
Ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease share certain complications and others that are specific to each disease. Complications with both diseases can be:
- Colon cancer. Ulcerative colitis or Crohn’s disease, which affects most of your colon, can increase your risk of colon cancer. Cancer screening usually begins around eight to ten years after diagnosis. Ask your doctor when and how often you should do this test.
