Im-puh-TIE-go (im-puh-TIE-go) is a common and highly contagious skin infection that primarily affects infants and children. Impetigo usually appears as red sores on the face, particularly around the child’s nose and mouth, and on the hands and feet. The wounds burst and develop honey-colored crusts. - The classic signs and symptoms of impetigo are red sores that burst quickly, ooze for a few days, and then form a yellowish-brown crust.
- Sores usually appear around the nose and mouth, but can spread to other areas of the body through fingers, clothing, and towels. The itching and stiffness are usually mild.
The reasons
You are exposed to the bacteria that cause impetigo when you come in contact with an infected person’s wounds or objects they’ve touched – like clothes, bed linen, towels, and even toys.
Risk factors
Factors that increase your risk of impetigo include:
- Age. Impetigo is most common in children aged 2 to 5 years.
- Crowded conditions. Impetigo spreads easily in schools and day care centers.
- Hot and humid weather. Impetigo infections are more common in summer.
- Certain sports. Participating in sports that involve skin contact, such as soccer or wrestling, increases the risk of developing impetigo.
- Cracked skin. The bacteria that cause impetigo often invade your skin through a small lesion on your skin, an insect bite, or a rash. Impetigo Treatment in Khammam
Complications
Impetigo is usually not dangerous. And wounds with milder forms of infection usually heal without scars.
In rare cases, complications from impetigo include:
- Cellulite. This potentially serious infection affects the underlying tissues of your skin and can eventually spread to the lymph nodes and bloodstream. Untreated cellulite can quickly become life threatening.
- Kidney problems. One of the types of bacteria that causes impetigo can also damage your kidneys.
preventions
Keeping your skin clean is the best way to keep it healthy. It is important to wash cuts, scratches, insect bites, and other wounds immediately.
To prevent impetigo from spreading to others:
- Gently wash the affected areas with mild soap and running water, then cover them lightly with cheesecloth.
- Wash an infected person’s clothes, bed linen, and towels every day and do not share them with anyone in your family.
- Wear gloves when applying an antibiotic ointment, and then wash your hands thoroughly. Impetigo Treatment in Khammam
