Hypoplastic left heart syndrome Treatment in Hyderabad

overview

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome is a complex and rare heart defect that is present at birth (congenital). In this condition, the left side of the heart is severely underdeveloped.

If your baby is born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, the left side of the heart cannot effectively pump blood to the body. Instead, the right side of the heart has to pump blood to the lungs and the rest of the body.

To treat hypoplastic left heart syndrome, drugs are needed to prevent the connection (ductus arteriosus) between the right and left sides from closing, followed by surgery or a heart transplant. Advances in care have improved the outlook for babies born with the disease. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome Treatment in Hyderabad

Babies born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome are usually seriously ill soon after they are born. Signs and symptoms are:

  • Gray-blue skin tone (cyanosis)
  • Fast and difficult breathing
  • Poor diet
  • Cold hands and feet
  • Weak pulse
  • Be unusually sleepy or inactive

  • Hypoplastic left heart syndrome occurs when a baby’s heart grows in the womb. The cause is unknown. However, if your family has a child with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, the risk of having another child with a similar condition is increased.

A normal heart has four chambers, two on the right and two on the left. In its basic job – to pump blood around the body – the heart uses its left and right sides to do different things. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome Treatment in Hyderabad

The right side carries blood to the lungs. In the lungs, oxygen enriches the blood, which then circulates to the left side of the heart. The left side of the heart pumps blood through a large vessel called the aorta, which circulates oxygenated blood to the rest of the body.

Risk factors

If you already have a child with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, you are at greater risk of having another baby with this or a similar disease.

Beyond family history, there are no clear risk factors for hypoplastic left heart syndrome.

prevention

There is no way to prevent hypoplastic left heart syndrome. If you have a family history of heart defects, or if you already have a child with a congenital heart defect, you should speak to a genetic counselor and cardiologist who has experience with congenital heart defects before you become pregnant.
