The psychology of hair loss in adolescents and young adults
In late adolescence, an individual is concerned about the physiological changes of puberty and puberty, the challenges of seeing the world with a new eye, the loss of innocence, school, peer pressure and social groups, etc. These are intrinsic psychological stress factors, that define and shape our humanity. How we deal with these early stressors can determine who we become for the rest of our lives. Adding hair loss to this stress in a teenager’s life can have far-reaching consequences. There is a possibility of depression, social withdrawal and even paranoia. A person whose development is influenced by these additional stress factors would be disadvantaged in all areas of life.
Hair restoration surgery in teenagers and young adults – what could go wrong?
A young patient considering hair transplantation should always remember that the transplanted hair is permanent while the hair he currently has is temporary, as hair loss would progress with age. Because the extent and rate of hair loss progression cannot be predicted, planning a hair transplant can be difficult. If this is not taken into account, a hair transplant would potentially result in a strange hair pattern that would occur if a transplant that originally merged into adjacent existing hairlines took on a strange appearance. This would happen if the already blended, existing hairline gradually declines to create a bare space between it and the transplanted hair. To correct this, more hair transplants would be needed to close the gap. However, this strange pattern may not be fixed if:
- The patient no longer has donor hair. This is particularly a problem for patients with severe baldness or if the transplanted hairline has been placed too aggressively.
- The patient cannot bear the costs of other procedures financially.
- Body hair also cannot be used because the physicians available to the patient do not have the experience, skills, or technology to perform a consistently successful FUE body hair transplant (BHT). In some patients, however, BHT is unthinkable due to an absolute lack of body hair and beards. There are large interethical differences in the quality and quantity of body hair in individuals.
