Chronic sinusitis occurs when the spaces in the nose and head (sinuses) become swollen and inflamed for three months or more despite treatment.

  • This common condition interferes with the normal flow of mucus and makes the nose congested. Breathing through your nose can be difficult, and the area around your eyes can be puffy or tender.
  • Chronic sinusitis can be caused by infection, growth of your sinuses (nasal polyps), or swelling of the lining of your sinuses. The disease is also known as chronic rhinosinusitis and can affect both adults and children.Chronic sinusitis Treatment Hyderabad

The reasons

Nasal polyps in the nose and sinuses

Common causes of chronic sinusitis are:

  • Nasal polyps. These growths of tissue can block the nasal passages or sinuses.
  • Deviated nasal septum. A twisted septum – the wall between your nostrils – can restrict or block sinus passages, making symptoms of sinusitis worse.
  • Other diseases. Complications from conditions such as cystic fibrosis, HIV, and other immune system disorders can lead to nasal congestion.
  • Respiratory infections. Infections of your respiratory tract – most often colds – can inflame and thicken your sinus membranes and block the drainage of mucus. These infections can be viral, bacterial, or fungal.
  • Allergies like hay fever. The inflammation that comes with allergies can block your sinuses.Chronic sinusitis Treatment Hyderabad

Risk factors

You are at an increased risk of chronic sinusitis if you:

  • A deflected septum
  • Nasal polyps
  • asthma
  • Aspirin sensitivity
  • Inflammation of the teeth
  • An immune system disorder such as HIV / AIDS or cystic fibrosis
  • Hay fever or other allergic conditions
  • Regular exposure to pollutants such as cigarette smoke

prevention

To reduce your risk of chronic sinusitis, do the following:

  • Avoid upper respiratory infections. Minimize contact with people with colds. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before meals.
  • Manage your allergies. Work with your doctor to keep symptoms under control. Avoid exposing yourself as much as possible to things that you are allergic to.
  • Avoid cigarette smoke and polluted air. Tobacco smoke and airborne contaminants can irritate and ignite your lungs and nasal passages.
  • Use a humidifier. If the air in your home is dry, as is the case with forced air heating, adding moisture to the air can help prevent sinusitis. Make sure the humidifier is clean and mold-free, and clean it regularly and thoroughly.Chronic sinusitis Treatment Hyderabad
